Murray wins 500th career match to reach Miami quarters; Djokovic survives scare, Venus out

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Andy Murray joined the 500 club Tuesday.

Murray, ranked third at the Miami Open, beat Kevin Anderson 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals and became the ninth active player to join a select group:

Murray said:

It means a lot. There's not a whole lot (of players) that have managed to get to 500. It's very nice to have done that. To do it here in Miami was quite fitting. I've done a lot of hard yards on this court, put in a lot of work here.

I hope it's not the last match I win! I hope I've got a few more in my career. There's a certain number I'd like to get to before I finish playing. Hopefully my body will hold up and give me the opportunity to get there.

Venus' tournament ends

Tuesday night got off to a great start for Venus Williams, as she took the first set against No. 12 Carla Suarez Navarro 6-0. But the Spaniard showed a lot of fight, forgetting all about the bagel and winning the next two sets 6-1, 7-5 to send No. 16 Venus packing.

Djokovic, Nishikori, Ferrer, Berdych advance

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic wasn't at his best Tuesday, but he recovered to get past Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-0 in slightly under two hours. Djokovic is the defending and four-time champion.

No. 4 Kei Nishikori cruised into the quarters, beating No. 18 David Goffin 6-1, 6-2 in under 70 minutes.

Tomas Berdych also advanced Tuesday to the quarterfinals of the Miami Open when Gael Monfils fell and hurt his hip.

The No. 8-seeded Berdych was leading 6-3, 3-2 when Monfils retired. Monfils, seeded 17th, said he bruised his hip but hopes to be able to play in his next scheduled tournament in Houston.

Berdych, the runner-up at Key Biscayne in 2010, remains in title contention after saving four match points against Bernard Tomic in the third round.

Also moving on is No. 6 David Ferrer, who beat No. 12 Gilles Simon in straight sets.

Unseeded Dominic Thiem of Austria advanced by beating No. 28 Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-5.
