Taylor-Serrano rematch added to Paul-Tyson card
The long-awaited rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano is finally set to happen as the co-main event of the July 20 Jake Paul-Mike Tyson card at AT&T Stadium, Netflix announced Tuesday.
Taylor and Serrano will be fighting for the former's undisputed super lightweight title. Serrano, who currently holds three of the four women's featherweight belts, will be moving up three levels for the rematch.
The fight will be 10 rounds of two minutes each. Serrano tweeted that she wanted to fight 12 three-minute rounds but deferred to the defending champion's preference.
The first Taylor-Serrano bout at Madison Square Garden in 2022 was an instant classic, with Taylor earning a narrow split-decision win. A rematch was originally scheduled for last May in Dublin, but Serrano had to withdraw after suffering an injury in training.
"Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano are two of the best boxers in the world," Tyson said, according to ESPN's Marc Raimondi. "I know they can both put on an incredible show, and I'm thrilled to have them join this card. These remarkable athletes will undoubtedly elevate the event with their global appeal and fan bases. Adding one of the greatest fights in women's boxing history to this unforgettable event is a true gift to fans."
Both already stand as two of the greatest and most decorated fighters in women's boxing history.
Taylor (23-1, six knockouts) became the undisputed women's super lightweight champion in November with a decision victory over Chantelle Cameron. The 37-year-old was previously the undisputed lightweight titleholder and still owns the WBA and WBC 135-pound titles. She's one of only eight boxers (male or female) to hold all four major world titles at the same time.
Serrano, who's successfully defended her undisputed featherweight belts three times, owns a 46-2-1 record with 30 KOs and has won four straight fights since losing to Taylor. "The Real Deal" is the only woman to win titles at more than four different weight classes.
Her most recent fight, a unanimous win over Danila Ramos at 126 pounds last October, was the first women's title fight in 16 years to be contested over 12 three-minute rounds. After beating Ramos, Serrano vacated her WBC featherweight title because the commission refused to sanction a 12-round women's bout.
Taylor-Serrano 2 will lead into the Paul-Tyson exhibition bout being put on by Paul's Most Valuable Promotions. The entire card will be streamed live on Netflix.
