Report: Chelsea in contention to sign Monchengladbach's Mahmoud Dahoud

Mahmoud Dahoud fled Amuda, Syria when he was only 10 months old. More than two decades later, he is reportedly on Chelsea's radar.

Per the Guardian's Ed Aarons, Chelsea is in contention to sign Dahoud from Borussia Monchengladbach but faces competition from Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus. The 21-year-old midfielder's contract will expire in June, and he apparently refused to sign a contract extension.

Reports surfaced in Germany on Friday saying Dahoud already agreed to join Dortmund for a fee of around €10 million, but his representatives allegedly spoke to Chelsea and other clubs in the last few weeks to negotiate a transfer. ESPN FC's Stephan Uersfeld reported in January that Manchester City and Liverpool were also targeting the player, while Max Eberl, the sporting director at Monchengladbach, told Kicker: "We will hold more talks in the near future. We want that Mo makes the second and third step here."

Monchengladbach was reportedly unwilling to let Dahoud join Liverpool during last year's transfer window after the Reds expressed interest, as the German club had just sold Granit Xhaka to Arsenal.

When he was only 10 months old, Dahoud fled the largely Kurdish town of Amuda, escaping the regime of Bashard al-Assad and settling in Germany. He came through Monchengladbach's academy and was in contention to take the pitch for Germany at Euro 2016, tallying five goals and eight assists during the 2015-16 Bundesliga.
