Wenger: I will never manage in non-league 'because it is too difficult'

Whether Arsene Wenger is at Arsenal beyond the summer remains to be seen, but, should the French manager and the Gunners part ways, there's one place he won't be going.

Speaking after Arsenal emerged unscathed from its trip to Sutton United in the fifth round of the FA Cup, Wenger admitted he could never be in charge of a non-league club. It was job done for the Gunners at Gander Green Lane on Monday, prompting him to say, according the Guardian's Amy Lawrence: "Yes, against a side that was astonishing. It is basically division five, and they are 17th out of 24. I will never go down there to manage because it is too difficult."

Arsenal's 2-0 victory at Sutton served as a diversion from the trauma of the Gunners' defeat at Bayern Munich in the Champions League's Round of 16. As the Guardian's Barney Ronay wrote, Wenger was seen signing autographs in the car park at Gander Green Lane and smiling. He looked calm while walking up and down the touchline, and he admitted the FA Cup tie conjured memories of his youth.

"I come from a club that is smaller than that so it reminds me of my childhood," Wenger said. "The changing rooms for me were fantastic - the closer you are, the more united you are when you go out there."

Another non-league adventure lies ahead for Arsenal. The Gunners will host Lincoln City, who knocked Burnley out of the FA Cup, in the quarter-finals. The tie will take place at the Emirates Stadium, but, if the tournament's fifth round is any indication, the Imps will take the pitch with a more organised approach than Sutton provided.
