Money talks: Premier League's 10 most expensive signings of the summer transfer window

Ina Fassbender / Reuters

The Premier League's summer transfer window closed Tuesday, bringing an end to two months of headache-inducing reports and endless gossip.

Records were broken left and right over the last two months, as a total of nearly £1 billion was spent by clubs in the top flight of English football, of which a significant amount came courtesy of Manchester City's wallet.

City broke its transfer record to bring in Raheem Sterling, and then broke it again to sign Kevin De Bruyne, throwing money at other clubs as if it grows on a tree that Sheikh Mansour planted at the Etihad Stadium.

Of course, many of English football's other giants, including City's eternal rival, Manchester United, were just as reckless with their bank accounts, splurging like a college student who just received his or her first credit card.

Here are the Premier League's 10 most expensive signings of the summer transfer window:

Kevin De Bruyne, Wolfsburg to Manchester City

Reported £54.5 million (Read more)

De Bruyne is the second-most expensive player in Premier League history after joining City from VfL Wolfsburg for a reported fee of £54.5 million. The Citizens are already the Premier League's top club, and their signing of the Belgian assist machine could very well push the title race over the edge.

Raheem Sterling, Liverpool to Manchester City

Reported £49 million (Read more)

In a transfer saga that is possibly still taking place in an alternate universe, Raheem Sterling joined City from Liverpool for a reported £49 million and subsequently became Public Enemy No. 1 at Anfield. Only four matchdays into the season, Sterling looks like he's worth his apparent price tag.

Anthony Martial, Monaco to Manchester United

Reported £36 million (Read more)

Expectations are high for 19-year-old Anthony Martial, who joined United from AS Monaco for a reported £36 million just before the deadline. The transfer made him the most expensive teenager on the planet, an honour previously held by Lucas Moura of Paris Saint-Germain.

Nicolas Otamendi, Valencia to Manchester City

Reported £33 million (Read more)

There's really no indication that City needs another centre-back. After all, the club hasn't conceded a single goal through four Premier League fixtures. However, that didn't stop the Citizens from tossing a reported £33 million to Valencia for Nicolas Otamendi.

Christian Benteke, Aston Villa to Liverpool

Reported £32.5 million (Read more)

Whether Liverpool was correct in activating Christian Benteke's release clause remains to be seen. His transfer from Aston Villa, allegedly valued at £32.5 million, is the second-most expensive in the Merseyside club's history after Andy Carroll's.

Roberto Firmino, Hoffenheim to Liverpool

Reported £29 million (Read more)

In a transfer aimed at addressing the void left by Sterling, Liverpool handed TSG 1899 Hoffenheim a reported sum of £29 million for Roberto Firmino and his eye for goal. Considering that he scored 23 goals and 21 assists through 66 appearances for the German club, the fee seems more than fair.

Memphis Depay, PSV Eindhoven to Manchester United

Reported £27.9 million (Read more)

Memphis Depay has already paid back a significant amount of the reported £27.9 million that United paid PSV Eindhoven for his services. The Red Devils' new No. 7 pretty much booked the club's place in the group stage of the Champions League, and there are few prospects who are as hyped as he is.

Morgan Schneiderlin, Southampton to Manchester United

Reported £25 million (Read more)

In an attempt to fix the midfield problems that have plagued United in recent seasons, the Red Devils spent a reported £25 million to sign Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton, beating out many of England's biggest clubs for the 25-year-old Frenchman's signature.

Son Heung-min, Bayer Leverkusen to Tottenham

Reported £22 million (Read more)

Supporters of Tottenham Hotspur are hoping that Son Heung-min doesn't prove to be yet another player who moves to White Hart Lane and fails to live up to his price tag. His transfer from Bayer Leverkusen is valued at a reported £22 million, which seems fair given that he's a proven goal-scorer.

Pedro, Barcelona to Chelsea

Reported £21.4 million (Read more)

Just when it looked like Pedro was on the brink of heading to Old Trafford, Chelsea appeared out of nowhere and hijacked the deal, signing the Spanish forward from Barcelona for an alleged £21.4 million. That's a lot of money to spend just so a player can't join a rival club.
