Now Aidy Boothroyd is set for a promotion at England's St George's Park base.

Following the rise of Gareth Southgate from managing the England Under-21s to handling the senior squad, Boothroyd is on the verge of being unveiled in full-time charge of the former, reports the Guardian's Dominic Fifield.

The 45-year-old has spent spells overseeing the Under-19s and Under-20s since 2014.

Currently in the Under-21 post on an interim basis, the former Watford and Northampton Town gaffer was present at last week's draw for that age bracket's European Championship in June 2017. After learning that the Young Lions were paired with host Poland, reigning champion Sweden, and Slovakia in Group A, Boothroyd spoke as if he fully intended on presiding over that campaign next summer.

"To play the hosts, the current holders and an unknown quantity in Slovakia, who did really well to qualify and have nothing to lose, it will be a very difficult group for us," Boothroyd told theFA.com's Nicholas Veevers.

"We have to make sure that we prepare properly and treat every game with the respect that it deserves."
