Hodgson eager to make managerial comeback

Ex-England boss Roy Hodgson revealed to Sky Sports' Stephen Turner he would "like to come back" to management, despite quitting as Three Lions gaffer last summer following a shock elimination to Iceland in Euro 2016.

The 69-year-old veteran does not want his managerial legacy to end in such a negative way and, for Hodgson, his age is just a number.

"I feel as good as I have ever done," he said. "Age has never been a factor. I feel fit.

"I think you become a better coach - if wisdom is a word which is at all relevant in football, I would like to think it is, you do become a bit wiser with the years.

"You perhaps make a few less mistakes dealing with players than you would have made when you were young, thought you knew it all and thought that you were invincible."

Hodgson was left to deal with a torrent of abuse from the media and British fans following his home nation's departure from Euro 2016, but he insists his mistakes have made him stronger.

"I certainly don't feel that I couldn't handle the day-to-day work and the day-to-day pressures," he continued.

"I just have to wait and see what comes along. I've not been in any particular rush. I've never had a long spell out of the game, it's always been a month or two and then back in again and sometimes not even that.

"So these four or five months won't do me any harm. But I'm hoping that something will come along that will really interest me."

Hodgson started his managerial career in 1976 when he joined Swedish club Halmstads BK. He spent five years at the club, winning the Allsvenskan league title on two separate occasions before leaving to eventually manage third-tier Bristol City for a brief stint in 1982.

The Croydon native's most recent managerial position at a club was at West Brom, where he helped the Baggies finish in 10th place in the Premier League, before he left to take control of England in 2012.
