Here is an updated look at the top 200 fantasy baseball rankings (position eligibility provided by Yahoo!):
Tier 1
Rank | PLAYER | TEAM | POSITION | TREND |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Mike Trout | LAA | OF1 | |
2 | Paul Goldschmidt | ARI | 1B1 | |
3 | Mookie Betts | BOS | OF2 | |
4 | Jose Altuve | HOU | 2B1 | |
5 | Nolan Arenado | COL | 3B1 | |
6 | Kris Bryant | CHC | 1B2/3B2/OF3 | |
7 | Anthony Rizzo | CHC | 1B3 | |
8 | Clayton Kershaw | LAD | SP1 | |
9 | Josh Donaldson | TOR | 3B3 | |
10 | Manny Machado | BAL | SS1/3B4 | |
11 | Max Scherzer | WAS | SP2 | |
12 | Corey Seager | LAD | SS2 | |
13 | Starling Marte | PIT | OF4 | |
14 | Carlos Correa | HOU | SS3 | |
15 | Bryce Harper | WAS | OF5 | |
16 | Trea Turner | WAS | 2B2/OF6 | |
17 | Miguel Cabrera | DET | 1B4 | |
18 | Madison Bumgarner | SF | SP3 | |
19 | Charlie Blackmon | COL | OF7 | |
20 | Xander Bogaerts | BOS | SS4 |
It's mostly status quo in the top 20. Of these, Turner has the opportunity to gain position eligibility at SS, which will enhance his overall value. He's pegged to be the Nationals' opening day shortstop with Daniel Murphy at 2B and Adam Eaton in CF.
Tier 2
Rank | Name | Team | Position | TREND |
---|---|---|---|---|
21 | Chris Sale | BOS | SP4 | |
22 | Noah Syndergaard | NYM | SP5 | |

25 | Robinson Cano | SEA | 2B3 | |

27 | Joey Votto | CIN | 1B6 | |
28 | Edwin Encarnacion | CLE | 1B7 | ▼ |
29 | Giancarlo Stanton | MIA | OF9 | |
30 | Jake Arrieta | CHC | SP7 | |
31 | Kyle Seager | SEA | 3B5 | |
32 | Brian Dozier | MIN | 2B4 | |
33 | Carlos Gonzalez | COL | OF10 | |
34 | Christian Yelich | MIA | OF11 | |
35 | Jacob deGrom | NYM | SP8 | |
36 | Ryan Braun | MIL | OF12 | |
37 | Daniel Murphy | WAS | 1B8/2B5 | |
38 | Jonathan Villar | MIL | 2B6/SS5/3B6 | ▲ |
39 | Stephen Strasburg | WAS | SP9 | |
40 | Francisco Lindor | CLE | SS6 | ▼ |
Encarnacion is older than Freeman and less steady than Votto. Progressive Field is less forgiving than Rogers Centre, though that didn't stop Mike Napoli, Carlos Santana, and Rajai Davis (of all people) from having big power surges for Cleveland in 2016. Encarnacion has excellent upside, but Freeman has a better team around him, making him the easy choice for 1B5.
Tier 3
Rank | Name | Team | Position | TREND |
---|---|---|---|---|
41 | Jon Lester | CHC | SP10 | |

50 | Dee Gordon | MIA | 2B7 | |
51 | Andrew McCutchen | PIT | OF17 | |
52 | Chris Davis | BAL | 1B11 | |
53 | Chris Archer | TB | SP13 | |
54 | Gregory Polanco | PIT | OF18 | |
55 | Justin Verlander | DET | SP14 | |
56 | Yu Darvish | TEX | SP15 | ▲ |
57 | Hanley Ramirez | BOS | 1B12 | |
58 | Trevor Story | COL | SS7 | |
59 | Jason Kipnis | CLE | 2B8 | |
60 | A.J. Pollock | ARI | OF19 |
Darvish basically switches places with Cleveland's Carlos Carrasco (who drops down a section). Darvish should be fully recovered from injury, while Carrasco finished his season on the DL. Carrasco has been throwing and his injury wasn't as serious as Darvish, so you can't really go wrong, but Darvish at his best is virtually unhittable.
Tier 4
Rank | Name | Team | Position | TREND |
---|---|---|---|---|
61 | Justin Upton | DET | OF20 | ▲ |
62 | Billy Hamilton | CIN | OF21 | |

68 | Todd Frazier | CWS | 1B14/3B9 | |
69 | DJ LeMahieu | COL | 2B10 | |
70 | Eric Hosmer | KC | 1B15 | |
71 | Troy Tulowitzki | TOR | SS8 | |
72 | Zack Greinke | ARI | SP17 | |
73 | Masahiro Tanaka | NYY | SP18 | |
74 | Carlos Martinez | STL | SP19 | |
75 | Ian Desmond | COL | OF23 | |
76 | Matt Carpenter | STL | 1B16/2B11/3B10 | |
77 | Kyle Hendricks | CHC | SP20 | |
78 | Ian Kinsler | DET | 2B12 | |
79 | Adam Jones | BAL | OF24 | |
80 | Albert Pujols | LAA | 1B17 |
Be careful with Upton; he's easy to both underrate and overrate. He started horrendously last season before rebounding to match his career high in home runs (31). Hamilton is the best single-category asset in fantasy baseball and his batting average was a respectable .293 after last year's All-Star break.
Tier 5
Rank | Name | Team | Position | TREND |

97 | Danny Salazar | CLE | SP24 | |
98 | Kyle Schwarber | CHC | C4/OF28 | |
99 | Khris Davis | OAK | OF29 | |
100 | Julio Teheran | ATL | SP25 | ▲ |
We overrate closers, and that's exactly what happened in previous iterations. Even the best of the best are volatile and, due to lack of innings, are not going to help in counting stats beyond saves. Quintana dropped earlier due to the pending fire sale in Chicago, and it hasn't exactly happened. Wins are unpredictable, and he'll still provide excellent returns everywhere else. A trade would boost him even more.
Tier 6

118 | Lorenzo Cain | KC | OF35 | |
119 | Seung Hwan Oh | STL | RP11 | |
120 | Gerrit Cole | PIT | SP30 |
Duffy's surge in value could implode, but he was successful as both a reliever and a starter. He showed some fatigue in the second half, but he maintained a solid K/9. Proceed with some caution, and consider him a possible sell-high candidate if he starts hot. Bradley's massive hit streak helped boost his overall value. He's solid, but not worth reaching for.

139 | Justin Turner | LAD | 1B23/3B15 | |
140 | Elvis Andrus | TEX | SS14 |
A healthy Harvey pitching to his potential is a top-20 SP - but he has provided diminishing returns with each season and proved to be a total bust, exacerbated by injury in 2016. Dahl will yo-yo around rankings because of the small sample size of his playing time, but he has a combination of power and speed. A .404 BABIP spells some trouble for his batting average.

159 | Tanner Roark | WAS | SP41 | |
160 | Dexter Fowler | STL | OF44 |
Forsythe immediately gains value as a run producer in the Dodgers' lineup. But don't be surprised if others overvalue him on draft day. Herrera is a fine player who ticks off a lot of boxes, but he's not indispensable. He is basically a complementary piece and little else. Still, he doesn't do anything so poorly it will hurt your roto team.
Tier 9
Rank | Name | Team | Position | Trend |

178 | Ben Zobrist | CHC | 2B18/OF48 | ▼ |
179 | Brian McCann | HOU | C10 | |
180 | Neil Walker | NYM | 2B19 | ▲ |
Matz is the Mets' starter to target if you missed out on the top two and are worried about Harvey's injuries. Nola's 3.08 FIP in 2016 outlines part of what could have been. He had a 9.81 K/9, rarely allowed home runs, and was blooped to death to the tune of a .334 BABIP. He's a big breakout candidate. Walker is a great late-round source of stability at a weak position.

198 | Javier Baez | CHC | 2B21/SS19/3B20 | |
199 | Tommy Joseph | PHI | 1B27 | |
200 | Blake Snell | TB | SP57 |
Gray and Wainwright could bounce back, but you should exercise caution due to their injuries and Wainwright's declining skills. Baez can't be trusted without a starting role, but the second someone gets injured, he'll explode. ... Snell has big strikeout upside, and could be the best pitcher other than Chris Archer in Tampa's rotation. It might not be long before he even usurps him.
