Late Fernandez's girlfriend gives birth to daughter Penelope
Maria Arias, the girlfriend of late Miami Marlins star Jose Fernandez, gave birth Friday to a baby girl, Penelope, sources told Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.
Penelope's name was picked out after Fernandez found out the baby's sex in August, about a month before he died in a boating accident that also claimed the lives of two of his friends, Eduardo Rivero and Emilio Macias.
Just days before he died, Fernandez posted a picture of a pregnant Arias on Instagram with the caption, "Family first."
"I'm so glad you came into my life," Fernandez wrote. "I'm ready for where this journey is gonna take us together."
At Fernandez's funeral, his agent, Scott Boras, noted how excited the exuberant Cuban was to become a father.
"He wanted to know, am I going to be a good father?" Boras said. "And I told him, you’re going to be a great father because you’re going to treat your child in the same way that your mother treated you and you’ll know exactly what to do," he said. "The next day he ordered a baseball glove in all those colors he loved and he put 'Penelope' on it."
