Hot-hitting Thames exits game with hamstring injury

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

A collective gasp came from the city of Milwaukee on Wednesday when Brewers first baseman Eric Thames left the eighth inning of a game against the Cincinnati Reds with an apparent injury.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell offered an opportunity for a sigh of relief, though, saying Thames left with left hamstring tightness that's not serious, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Counsell also posited that Thames may have injured his hamstring by getting on base so much. The slugger has a ridiculous .489 OBP.

Thames flew out to end the seventh inning and was replaced at first base by Jesus Aguilar during outfielder Scott Schebler's at-bat. Milwaukee held onto an early lead to win 9-4.

While Thames didn't add to his MLB-leading 11 home runs prior to leaving, he did go 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored. The runs raised his season total to 27. The MLB record for runs scored in April is 29, set by Larry Walker in 1997 when he played for the Colorado Rockies.

The Brewers have a day off Thursday before opening a three-game series against the visiting Atlanta Braves on Friday. Thames told Haudricourt that he's going to take it easy on the off day.

"Trust me, we've been looking forward to this," Thames said. "I'm going to stay in bed. I'm not going to move."

Thames is hitting .370 with 11 home runs and 19 RBIs through 21 games.
