Mets' deGrom strikes out game's first 8 batters to tie MLB record; finishes with 13

New York Mets rookie right-hander Jacob deGrom was dealing Monday. 

The 26-year-old tied a modern-day MLB record by striking out the first eight Miami Marlins he faced, before allowing a single to pitcher Jarred Cosart.

deGrom, who tied Houston Astros left-hander Jim Deshaies's record from 1986, finished with a career-high 13 strikeouts in seven innings of work. 

Selected 272nd in the 2010 MLB draft, deGrom has arguably been the Mets' best pitcher this season. In 20 starts, he owns an 8-6 record and 2.62 ERA in addition to 121 strikeouts over 127 1/3 innings.
