Yangel Herrera joins NYCFC on loan from Manchester City

One of MLS's most infamous partnerships has bore fruit once more as New York City FC has plucked yet another talent out of parent outfit Manchester City. This time, Venezuela midfielder Yangel Herrera is swapping the Etihad for Yankee Stadium, with NYCFC announcing the season-long loan.

Herrera signed for Manchester City on Jan. 31 out of Atletico Venezuela and said he is "very happy to take this next step" in his career, especially because he'll be under the tutelage of NYCFC head coach Patrick Vieira.

"To have the opportunity to play with such a high caliber of players is very exciting and to join a team that has a good football philosophy is very important to me," Herrera said.

"I'm looking forward to playing under Patrick Vieira as he's someone who played my position and I know I'll be able to learn a lot from him. I want to absorb all the good things from Patrick and the other players."

The defensive midfielder will look to slot in alongside Andrea Pirlo in the NYCFC midfield, and Vieira is expecting Herrera to live up to his assessment as a "tactically intelligent midfielder who is strong in the tackle and reads the game well."

"Yangel also has good passing range and spatial awareness, which is crucial for a player in his position," Vieira said. "I look forward to welcoming him to our squad after the South American Championships where he's been playing very well for Venezuela."
