The Sacramento Kings finally added some much-needed depth at point guard.

The team announced Wednesday it has reached an agreement with free-agent point guard Ty Lawson. His deal spans just the 2016-17 campaign, sources tell Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.

The New Orleans Pelicans also showed "serious interest" in the 28-year-old, Wojnarowski adds.

Once considered a fringe All-Star candidate, Lawson will now be joining his third team within a year. With a stat line of 5.7 points and 3.6 assists, Lawson posted career-lows across the board last season as he split 66 appearances between the Indiana Pacers and Houston Rockets.

Having performed like one of the worst players in the league last year, Lawson complained about his playing time in Houston before eventually being bought out.

Off the court, Lawson also continued to battle legal troubles involving cases of impaired driving. He was suspended three games by the league last season after being hit with a second DUI charge within the span of seven months.

These factors led to Lawson going largely unnoticed in free agency, but given the Kings' dire need for depth at point guard, the perpetually cellar-dwelling franchise felt compelled to roll the dice with a potentially undervalued performer like Lawson.

For the moment, the Kings have only Darren Collison as a starter, while Garrett Temple figures to back up the point, but both players might prove inadequate. Collison is facing two charges of domestic violence, and Temple is a shooting guard by trade.

Sacramento has an alarming need for a stable lead guard, and while Lawson isn't necessarily the model of stability, he might be their best shot at one.
