Ray Allen on NBA future: 'I won't officially retire'

Ray Allen didn't play a single game during the 2014-15 regular season. He also recently gave away a large number of his sneakers in an Instagram scavenger hunt. Don't take those as signs Allen is ready to call it a career, though.

"I haven't said anything about that and I won't officially retire," Allen said during his basketball camp for kids at East Granby High on Saturday, according to Dom Amore of the Hartford Courant.

"Because if something came to the table, contractually and situationally, I want to be able to take a strong look at it. I don't want to be that guy that says he's retiring and then is coming back."

Allen, who turned 40 on July 20, wouldn't have a problem with never stepping on the hardwood again, as his resume certainly speaks for itself.

"It would be one thing if I played 10 or 11 years," he said. "But playing 18, I got a lot out of it. I like the feeling of knowing I don't have to beat myself into the ground."

Allen said he had his fair share of offers from teams looking to add a veteran shooter last season, with "a quarter to half" the league giving him a call about making a return prior to the playoffs.

As he continues to contemplate his basketball future, Allen will work toward completing his degree in communications at the University of Connecticut, needing another year or so before he earns all of his credits.

"I've always been about progress and accomplishment. When you set your mind toward a goal, you continue to have follow-through," Allen said. "That's kind of ironic, because that's what I've done my whole life, follow through with my jump shot. I want to have that same follow-through in life, to have that degree."

In 1,300 games, Allen has averaged 18.9 points and 4.1 rebounds while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range. His 2,973 makes from behind the arc are the most in league history.
