Roy Williams says he twice rejected NC State while at Kansas

NC State apparently tried twice to hire Roy Williams, whose team sealed Mark Gottfried's firing by blowing out the Wolfpack on Wednesday.

Williams revealed Friday that he was contacted about the NC State coaching job on two separate occasions while he was at Kansas. It's unknown if Williams, who coached the Jayhawks from 1988-2003, was ever interested in the position.

Williams left Kansas after the 2002-03 season to take the North Carolina job. NC State made two coaching changes during his tenure at Kansas.

The Wolfpack hired Les Robinson to replace Jim Valvano after the 1989-90 campaign, and Herb Sendek replaced Robinson after the 1995-96 season, once Robinson became the school's athletic director and surrendered coaching duties.

NC State is now again in the hunt for a coach after announcing Gottfried's dismissal Thursday, but it's safe to say the 66-year-old Williams won't be on the radar this time around.

North Carolina is 27-3 against NC State under Williams, and swept this season's series by a combined 75 points.
