Historic Final Four leading to record-setting ticket demand on resale market

Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

History will be made in Arizona this weekend.

The 2017 Final Four will be held at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale on Saturday, and while Gonzaga and South Carolina make their first appearances in school history, North Carolina and Oregon fill out a bracket that’s setting record prices for Final Four tickets on the resale market.

On search engine TicketIQ, the average resale price for an All Sessions Pass, which includes access to both semifinal games and Monday’s championship game, is now $2,166. That makes it the most expensive Final Four since at least 2011. It surpasses 2015’s Final Four at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, where All Sessions Passes averaged $1,985.

Expect to dig deep if looking just to get past the gates for all three games. The cheapest All Sessions Pass is currently fetching for $504 in the 400 sections of the stadium. Additional savings can be found by downloading the TicketIQ app.

Attending individual sessions won’t be much cheaper. Session 1 tickets, which grant access to both Final Four games on Saturday, are averaging $1,248. That exceeds 2015’s Final Four average of $1,109. The cheapest tickets are going for $391 each.

The best ticket deals may come for next Monday’s championship game, which is posting the lowest prices for a title matchup since 2014’s game at AT&T Stadium. Tickets currently average $694 with a get-in price of $194. The past two championship games have averaged upwards of $700 each.

That big demand can be credited to the Zags and Gamecocks’ first Final Four appearance, but don’t discount Oregon's and UNC’s notable berths. The Ducks last clinched a Final Four spot in 1939, and their appearance along with the Bulldogs ends a 54-year Final Four drought in the Pacific Northwest. On the back of a game-clinching jumper over Kentucky from sophomore Luke Maye, the Tar Heels are headed to their 20th Final Four, the most ever by any school in tournament history.
