One of North Carolina's biggest names has broken his silence in the wake of the school's academic fraud scandal.

"We made some mistakes for a long time," basketball coach Roy Williams said after a 111-58 win over Fayetteville State in UNC's first exhibition of the season on Friday. "It's a very sad time for us. ...

But the legendary coach insisted, "I feel strongly, strongly that we did things the right way."

Following a season that included eligibility issues for players Leslie McDonald and P.J. Hairston, who accepted impermissible benefits, the 64-year-old coach surely faces a second straight year of questions.

"If this were my first 16 months of coaching, you wouldn't see a 17th month. It's been a pain in the rear end, but I believe in this university," Williams said.

Williams also admitted that he found it odd so many players were taking the same classes.

"I didn't like that we had so many guys in the same major," Williams said. "I didn't think it made sense."
