Atlanta, Charlotte, Detroit, Houston, Miami, Minnesota, New Orleans, San Antonio, and Santa Clara, Calif. are the cities bidding for the 2018, 2019, and 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship games, executive director Bill Hancock announced Wednesday.

The news was first reported by Brett McMurphy of ESPN.

Of the cities mentioned, only Houston and Santa Clara bid on all three years. Here's how the breakdown of bids looks:

"We are pleased that the leaders in these communities recognize the significance of the event, and we are excited about what we know will be a competitive bidding process," Hancock said in a statement. "In its first year, the national championship game brought tremendous opportunity to North Texas as the epicenter of college football, and we know that success will continue in the future."

The announcement came from Destin, Fla., which is where the SEC is holding its annual spring meetings this week. The SEC produced seven consecutive national champions from 2007 through 2013.

Looking beyond these years to future title games, Hancock said, "We'd like to move it around the country as much as possible."

The inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship was held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, where Ohio State defeated Oregon 42-20. The 2015 and 2016 national title games will be held in Tampa, Fla., and Glendale, Ariz., respectively.

During the BCS era, Miami hosted the national title game four times, as did New Orleans. Santa Clara will serve as the site of Super Bowl 50 in February.

The winning bid is expected to be announced later this year.
