WrestleMania Roundtable: Dream matches, what should main event Sunday?

WWE/YouTube

With WrestleMania taking place Sunday, theScore is celebrating the WWE's annual marquee event throughout the week with an in-depth look. Here, theScore staff discusses which advertised bout they feel should close the show, as well as potential dream encounters they'd like to see down the road.

Which match do you feel deserves to close WrestleMania 33? (ex. Lesnar-Goldberg, Reigns-Undertaker, Orton-Wyatt, Owens-Jericho etc.)

Christopher Walder: It's difficult to imagine anything other than Brock Lesnar vs. Bill Goldberg ending the night. Based off of their recent interactions, that match could conclude at any given moment with a single spear, jackhammer, or F-5. After a six-hour show, that would almost be refreshing.

As an old-school kind of guy, I would prefer to see the man who won the Royal Rumble in that spot, making me lean towards Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt.

Andrew Barron: Here is some arbitrary criteria for what WrestleMania main events should feature:

  • Full-timers
  • Wrestlers who can wrestle
  • A championship is at stake
  • Won't be an 86- or 21-second squash

So, with that, let’s choose Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens for the United States Championship, a main event any wrestling purist would be happy with. Two of the best wrestlers in the world and no part-timers helicoptering in to take top-of-the-card spots from full-timers busting their butts year-round.

Mike Dickson: Brock Lesnar vs. Bill Goldberg is obviously the match the WWE has been pushing as the main event, but it just doesn't deserve the spot.

Goldberg in his prime was never known for great matches, and that was 20 years ago. Instead, the final match should be reserved for Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens, which should be a terrific match and would end the card on a very high note.

Alexander Lee: Count me among those who had no interest in ever seeing these two tie up a second time, but with how much time and effort they've committed to this feud, Brock Lesnar vs. Bill Goldberg has to close out the show.

Give this special attraction 10 minutes of intros and five minutes of action, then let us never speak of this again.

Bryan McWilliam: The finale of WrestleMania 33 should go to Brock Lesnar and Bill Goldberg.

Although a showdown featuring the Undertaker or the WWE Championship match between Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt may produce better wrestling, no match will produce a higher entertainment value than Lesnar and Goldberg based simply on reputation and their current feud.

Goldberg has had Lesnar’s number like no one else since his return to WWE, and with the Universal Championship on the line, this match should be one for the ages.

What's the 1 (realistic) match you would one day love to see at a WrestleMania?

Barron: A dream matchup of dream matchups: CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan.

Sure, they’ve feuded before, in 2012, but not at WrestleMania, and the WWE landscape is night and day different than what it was a half-decade ago. Was any superstar as over as Bryan was at his pinnacle? His retirement was a gut-punch to the industry. And a returning Punk would turn the WWE Universe on its head.

Correctly booked, this could be an era-defining match.

Dickson: This one is realistic, as both men are still breathing, but the chances of it happening are about zero.

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin vs. CM Punk would be my dream WrestleMania matchup. Two of the best who have ever done it on both the mic and in the ring would (health issues not being a factor) put together one hell of a show.

And the leader of the straight-edge society against the beer-guzzling rattlesnake, what sets itself up for a better confrontation than that?

McWilliam: Shawn Michaels vs. A.J. Styles

In October, "The Phenomenal One" told Sports Illustrated he would have loved to square off against Michaels at the Royal Rumble, and that could have become a reality at WrestleMania 33 if Michaels hadn't turned it down.

Although HBK is well passed his prime, he's arguably one of the greatest competitors to step foot in the ring, and he'd still be able to give the fans a show. With Styles' abilities providing the match with more length and additional credibility, just seeing the pair in the same ring together would be a dream come true.

Lee: Shawn Michaels vs. A.J. Styles

Never say never, especially when you consider Michaels has somehow managed to actually stick to his 2010 retirement.

You can't keep a good wrestler down, and the all-time great has a whole year to prepare for a dream match with Styles, whom many consider to be the best in the business today.

Walder: Give me A.J. Styles vs. The Rock, please and thank you.

Styles could wrestle a mop handle with Dwayne Johnson's face planted on it, and carry it to a four-star match at the very least.

His back-and-forth with Chris Jericho at WrestleMania 32 was quite good, and he'll probably get a semi-decent performance out of non-wrestler Shane McMahon on Sunday. Regardless, I want to see Styles take part in a classic with someone of Rock's caliber, and etch his name into 'Mania lore.
