WBO strips Floyd Mayweather of welterweight title

Floyd Mayweather is no longer the WBO welterweight champion.

After defeating Manny Pacquiao on May 2 and becoming the WBO welterweight champion, Mayweather was required to pay a $200,000 sanctioning fee and relinquish his junior middleweight titles, since the WBO prohibits boxers from holding titles in different weight classes.

Mayweather did not meet the WBO's deadline of July 3, after which they said he'd be stripped of his welterweight title if he failed to give up his other belts.

The 38-year-old appeared to be on board after the May bout, saying, "Other fighters need a chance ... I'm not greedy ... It's time to let other fighters fight for the belt."

With no word from Mayweather or his representatives Friday, the WBO announced the decision Monday.
