Report: 49ers are 'strong possibility' for Tamme in free agency

Kyle Shanahan taking over at head coach has already resulted in the San Francisco 49ers being tied to one of the Atlanta Falcons' impending free agents.

Heading to the Bay Area along with his now-former offensive coordinator is a "strong possibility" for Jacob Tamme in free agency, ESPN's Vaughn McClure reports, citing multiple sources.

The veteran tight end is scheduled to become a free agent after two years in Shanahan's offense with the Falcons, where he recorded 81 receptions for 867 yards and four touchdowns across 23 regular-season games.

Remaining with the defending NFC champs will be an attractive option for Tamme looking ahead, but he'll certainly have options in the event he makes it to the open market.

"I love being a Falcon, love my teammates, love what we have going on here in this organization," Tamme told McClure. "I’m interested to see what the future holds."

Shanahan's offenses have long made use of multiple tight ends, and a veteran familiar with the finer points of the system could certainly be valuable in the early stages of the transition.

Vance McDonald was the most productive tight end in San Francisco last season, as he finished the year with 24 receptions for 391 yards and four touchdowns in 11 starts.
