Report: Texans to pursue Romo if he becomes free agent

Bill Streicher / USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Texans will pursue Tony Romo if he becomes a free agent, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Romo remains with the Dallas Cowboys but has been subject to rampant trade speculation after Dak Prescott emerged as the team's clear-cut starter. It was reported on March 8 that Romo would be eventually released by the Cowboys, but the move has yet to come to fruition.

Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett revealed Monday that the organization has yet to make a decision on Romo's future.

The Texans traded Brock Osweiler to the Cleveland Browns on March 9, along with a sixth-round pick in 2017 and a 2018 second-rounder in exchange for a 2017 compensatory fourth-round selection. Houston signed Osweiler to a four-year, $72-million contract in March 2016, but he struggled immensely in his lone season with the franchise, throwing 15 touchdowns against 16 interceptions.

Tom Savage is currently atop the Texans' depth chart, and it's possible the team uses its first-round pick on a quarterback next month.
