NFL Mock Draft: Projecting Day 2 picks after eventful opening round

Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

You didn't think mock draft season was over yet, did you?

The first round gets all the hype, and justifiably so. But Day 2 is when the great franchises separate themselves from the pack.

Based on the picks made in Round 1, here are updated projections of what could happen in the second and third rounds Friday night.

Picks
Round 2 | Round 3

33. Green Bay Packers (via CLE) - Forrest Lamp, G, Western Kentucky

Green Bay gets first-round value after trading back and picking up an extra pick, addressing a major need on the interior offensive line in the process.

34. Seattle Seahawks (via SF) - Kevin King, CB, Washington

This has been an obvious connection throughout the draft process. Seattle needs corners, likes them athletic, and King is an absolute freak.

35. Jacksonville Jaguars - Cam Robinson, OT, Alabama

Sticking with Blake Bortles for now and looking to field a power running game, Jacksonville needs the line to make it all work. Robinson is a steal here.

36. Chicago Bears - Marcus Williams, S, Utah

Having found their quarterback of the future, the Bears turn to the defensive side for a playmaker on the back end.

37. Los Angeles Rams - JuJu Smith-Schuster, WR, USC

Jared Goff will need some targets if he's going to have any chance of turning into the quarterback the Rams thought they were getting last year.

38. Los Angeles Chargers - Budda Baker, S, Washington

After making the surprise pick of Mike Williams in the first round, San Diego lands a versatile safety to round out an impressive defensive backfield.

39. New York Jets - DeShone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame

Kizer has as much upside as any quarterback in this class. Why not take a chance on him at this spot?

40. Carolina Panthers - Taylor Moton, OL, Western Michigan

Getting Christian McCaffrey and upgrading the offensive line in the first two rounds is a great start for the Panthers.

41. Cincinnati Bengals - Jordan Willis, DE, Kansas State

Pass-rusher has to be a priority for Cincinnati on Day 2. Willis is an elite athlete who could make an immediate impact on the edge.

42. New Orleans Saints - Derek Rivers, DE, Youngstown State

It'd be tough for the Saints to pass up a pass-rusher like Rivers, who can line up opposite Cameron Jordan and round out the defensive line.

43. Philadelphia Eagles - Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State

Nobody would have argued with the Eagles making this pick to land their featured runner in the first round. Scooping up Cook is a no-brainer here.

44. Buffalo Bills - Chris Godwin, WR, Penn State

Godwin, a highly underrated receiver in this talented class, would be a tremendous No. 2 option opposite Sammy Watkins.

45. Arizona Cardinals - Davis Webb, QB, Cal

The Cardinals need to find a developmental quarterback, and Bruce Arians loves a big arm.

46. Indianapolis Colts - Malik McDowell, DL, Michigan State

McDowell is a top-10 talent who likely slid out of the first round due to reasons beyond his potential. Indianapolis takes a chance that could pay off in a big way.

47. Baltimore Ravens - Alvin Kamara, RB, Tennessee

A top running back talent would add a new element to the Ravens' offense, and Kamara could be particularly valuable in the passing game.

48. Minnesota Vikings - Joe Mixon, RB, Oklahoma

Some team is going to take a chance on Mixon's talent. Making their first pick of the draft, the Vikings opt for the greatest upside in bolstering the offense.

49. Washington Redskins - Obi Melifonwu, S, Connecticut

Melifonwu is an incredible athlete who could play either cornerback or safety, and the Redskins could use help throughout the secondary.

50. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Josh Jones, S, NC State

Jones' athleticism and physicality would be a major addition for a Tampa Bay secondary that doesn't have much to work with in the deep middle.

51. Denver Broncos - Chris Wormley, DL, Michigan

The Broncos' defensive front took a significant step back last year. A perfect fit at the five-technique, Wormley steps in and solidifies the interior.

52. Cleveland Browns (via TEN) - Chidobe Awuzie, CB, Colorado

Cleveland continues to do a phenomenal job of stockpiling talent, this time landing a versatile cornerback who was generating first-round buzz.

53. Detroit Lions - Carl Lawson, DE, Auburn

Detroit upgrades the front seven for the second time in as many picks, this time getting a bookend pass-rusher to go with Ziggy Ansah.

54. Miami Dolphins - Quincy Wilson, CB, Florida

The Dolphins look in-state for a long-term fix for their cornerback woes. Wilson would compete to start as a rookie.

55. New York Giants - Antonio Garcia, OT, Troy

New York was entirely justified in passing up a tackle to add a dynamic playmaker in Evan Engram. The need just can't be ignored any longer.

56. Oakland Raiders - Zach Cunningham, LB, Vanderbilt

A sideline-to-sideline linebacker who can play all three downs would go a long way toward fixing Oakland's issues on defense. That's Cunningham.

57. Houston Texans - Dion Dawkins, OT, Temple

The Texans finally got their quarterback in the first round. Taking care of the right tackle spot could be a final piece for a potential Super Bowl contender.

58. Seattle Seahawks - Tyus Bowser, EDGE, Houston

Bowser would be the perfect addition to the edge-rush rotation in Seattle. He's the exact kind of athlete this organization covets.

59. Kansas City Chiefs - Sidney Jones, CB, Washington

Kansas City can afford to take a player who may not contribute right away. A long-term cornerback tandem of Jones and Marcus Peters is scary good.

60. Dallas Cowboys - Fabian Moreau, CB, UCLA

Dallas needs secondary help in the worst way. Moreau could start immediately and for many years to come.

61. Green Bay Packers - Larry Ogunjobi, DT, Charlotte

The Packers can't go into the season without adding talent on the interior defensive front. Ogunjobi can line up and contribute at several spots.

62. Pittsburgh Steelers - Cordrea Tankersley, CB, Clemson

Pittsburgh will have to upgrade the secondary for the defense to take another step. Tankersley and 2016 first-round pick Artie Burns would be a solid pairing.

63. Atlanta Falcons - Dan Feeney, G, Indiana

Atlanta got its pass-rusher on Day 1. Finding a long-term starter at guard in the second takes care of another one of the roster's few needs.

64. Carolina Panthers (via NE) - Tarell Basham, EDGE, Ohio

An aging group of defensive linemen makes this an obvious target position for Carolina. Basham would bring a lot to the table as a rotational rusher early on.
