Report: Packers considering Kizer at 33rd overall, getting trade calls for pick

Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

The Green Bay Packers hold the first selection on Day 2 of the 2017 NFL Draft after moving out of the first round, and they're reportedly considering an unlikely target.

The top quarterback prospect remaining, DeShone Kizer, is in play for the Packers with the 33rd overall pick, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

Green Bay is also receiving trade calls about the first pick of the second round, but could decide to stay in the spot, added Rapoport.

Kizer was thought to be a first-round prospect, but he didn't hear his name called on Day 1 after fellow quarterbacks Mitchell Trubisky, Deshaun Watson, and Patrick Mahomes were all taken within the first 12 picks.

It's surprising the Packers are thinking of taking a quarterback with a premium pick, considering Aaron Rodgers, 33, is still very much in his prime, and Green Bay desperately needs help on the defensive side of the ball.

However, the former Notre Dame player is a long-term project, so the Packers could view him as a valuable backup to Rodgers and a potentially in-demand trade piece down the line.
