Lions GM: Goff extension is 'high priority'
Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes wants quarterback Jared Goff to stay with the team for the foreseeable future.
"First and foremost, he's earned an extension," Holmes said Thursday, according to the Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett. "It's important, it's a high priority for us, and both sides are working really, really hard, and these things just take time."
Goff's deal expires after the 2024 campaign. He's set to count $32.3 million against the Lions' salary cap for the upcoming season, per Over The Cap.
The Lions began retaining their key offensive players in April, signing offensive tackle Penei Sewell and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown to four-year extensions that will keep them with the team through 2029 and 2028, respectively.
Holmes said re-signing Goff at the same time would've been ideal but cited the differences in the quarterback market as a factor for the delay.
Despite that, the 44-year-old general manager said he has "faith that it's going to get done."
Detroit ranked third in total offense (394.8 yards per game) and fifth in scoring last season (27.1 points per game). It won the NFC North for the first time in franchise history with a 12-5 record.
Goff, 29, had one of his best seasons as a pro in 2023. He completed 67.3% of his passes for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His completion percentage was the best of his eight-year career, while his yardage and touchdown marks were the third- and second-highest he's posted, respectively.
