Janay Rice describes her experience of domestic violence incident

Brad Penner / USA TODAY

Janay Rice, the wife of recently reinstated running back Ray Rice, described being assaulted by Ray in an elevator in an ESPN article released Friday.

Janay recounts the events that took place in the Atlantic City casino elevator in February, telling ESPN's Jemele Hill:

We got into the elevator and what happened inside is still foggy to me. The only thing I know -- and I can't even say I "remember" because I only know from what Ray has told me -- is that I slapped him again and then he hit me. I remember nothing else from inside the elevator.

"We had our share of normal disagreements," she says of their relationship, but says Ray had never shown any violent tendencies towards her before that night.

The piece outlines how the assault has affected her life, specifically how the media coverage turned her world upside down.

Janay also discusses the May press conference where she and Ray both spoke. While the Baltimore Ravens encouraged her to do so, Janay says she wanted to take ownership of her role in the incident:

I had already apologized to Ray, and I felt that I should take responsibility for what I did. Even though this followed the Ravens' suggested script, I owned my words. I also wanted to show people that I was supportive of Ray just like I'd always been. At that point, I felt very optimistic that this would soon be over.
