49ers release Ray McDonald amid rape allegations

The San Francisco 49ers announced the release of Ray McDonald on Wednesday amid an investigation into rape allegations against the defensive lineman.

"We just want to inform everybody that after the recent allegations concerning Ray McDonald, we as an organization have notified him and his agent that he will be terminated, released immediately. Effective immediately," general manager Trent Baalke said, according to CSNBayArea.com

"While this organization has a strong belief in due process and has demonstrated that over time, Ray has demonstrated a pattern of poor decision-making that has led to multiple distractions for this organization and this football team that really can no longer be tolerated."

The San Jose Police Department served a search warrant to the home of McDonald on Tuesday, after a woman told officers that she may have been sexually assaulted there a day earlier. A preliminary investigation revealed McDonald as the alleged suspect.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
