Report: Giants concerned Pierre-Paul could miss start of season after fireworks accident

Jason Pierre-Paul's fireworks accident is starting to worry some people in the organization.

The New York Giants are concerned his hand injury may force him to miss training camp and the start of the season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Schefter's report follows an earlier claim that the Giants withdrew the contract offer - worth a reported $60 million - they previously made to the star defensive end, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

While Rapoport added that Pierre-Paul was unlikely to accept the deal regardless, the Giants pulling the offer would suggest they're now content to have him play this year under the franchise tag before taking a chance on a long-term deal.

Should Pierre-Paul sign the one-year tender, which seems likely given the current state of negotiations and the fast-approaching July 15 deadline, he'd be in line to receive a $14.8-million salary for the 2015 campaign.

The two sides could conceivably reopen negotiations at season's end, but the 26-year-old would tentatively be set to become an unrestricted free agent at the beginning of the new league year.

One of the NFL's most explosive edge-rushers, Pierre-Paul is entering his sixth season with the Giants after joining the club as a first-round draft selection in 2010.

Pierre-Paul was reportedly injured while attempting to light fireworks on the Fourth of July. He was hospitalized over the weekend, and doctors were reportedly still examining his hand for nerve damage and other injuries as of Sunday night.
