The BC Lions fired head coach DeVone Claybrooks after one season, the team announced Wednesday.

The Lions finished last in the West with a 5-13 record in Claybrooks' only campaign at the helm.

"This has been a challenging season," general manager Ed Hervey said in a statement. "We did not meet the expectations we set for ourselves in 2019 and more importantly, we did not meet the expectations of our season ticket holders, fans, and partners.

"We thank DeVone for his time and dedication while also wishing him the very best in the future," added Hervey. "This decision was difficult, but we will continue to do everything possible to reach and exceed the standards we have committed to within our organization."

Claybrooks was hired in December 2018 after three seasons as the Calgary Stampeders' defensive coordinator.

BC didn't win a single game against a West division opponent this year.
