Huddersfield equal dismal record with early relegation

The Terriers didn't have enough bite.

Huddersfield Town are the first club to be relegated into the Championship this season after Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace and results elsewhere confirmed their fate.

The loss at Selhurst Park, along with victories for Southampton and Burnley, meant Jan Siewert's side equalled the record for the fastest Premier League demotion. Huddersfield share that unwanted piece of pub trivia with Derby County, who collected a dire 11 points in the 2007-08 term.

The issues at Huddersfield are obvious. The West Yorkshire outfit has netted just 18 times in 32 matches and only Fulham have conceded more goals. David Wagner, undoubtedly a legendary manager in the club's history, stepped off the sinking ship in January, clearing the way for Siewert.

The result that sent Huddersfield down was deserved. Crystal Palace wasted a series of chances before Wilfried Zaha was felled for a penalty that skipper Luka Milivojevic converted after 76 minutes. Patrick van Aanholt put the Eagles two up near the end when he measured a ball through Ben Hamer's legs.

Coincidentally, Huddersfield's Premier League adventure began at Selhurst Park in August 2017. The Terriers won 3-0 on that occasion with a Joel Ward own goal and Steve Mounie brace.

Huddersfield Town will end their two-year residency in the top flight with matches against Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Watford, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Southampton.
