Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli issued an apology Sunday after posting a video on social media that appeared to joke about the coronavirus outbreak.

In the initial video on Saturday, Alli filmed himself wearing a facemask at an airport lounge with the caption, "Corona whattt, please listen with volume."

He then zoomed in on an oblivious Asian man before turning the camera to a bottle of hand sanitizer with another caption that read, "This virus gunna have to be quicker than that to catch me."

On Sunday night, Alli issued an apology via the Chinese social media platform Weibo.

"I'd like to apologize for the video I posted on Snapchat yesterday,” Alli said, according to Ed Aarons of the Guardian.

"It wasn't funny. I realized that immediately and took it down. I let myself down and the club. I don't want you guys to have that impression of me. It isn’t something that should be joked about. Sending all my love and thoughts and prayers for everyone in China."

On Monday, the United Kingdom declared coronavirus to be a "serious and imminent threat to public health." Meanwhile, the total number of deaths in China has soared to more than 900.
