Manchester United missed all of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's primary targets in the summer transfer window, including Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho, Aston Villa's Jack Grealish, RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano, and Bournemouth's Nathan Ake, sources told ESPN's Mark Ogden.

United closed out the window with a flurry of activity, completing deals for striker Edinson Cavani, 18-year-old Amad Traore, left-back Alex Telles, and 18-year-old winger Facundo Pellistri.

However, Solskjaer and his staff didn't have any of those players on their short list, according to Ogden.

But the Norwegian manager reportedly gave his approval to each signing, including midfielder Donny van de Beek, who arrived earlier in the summer from Ajax.

The Red Devils' summer-long pursuit of Sancho never made any progress, as Dortmund made it clear on several occasions they wouldn't sell him for anything less than £108 million.

A move for Grealish, valued by Villa at around £80 million, never materialized, and the English midfielder eventually signed a new long-term contract with his hometown club.

Upamecano also put pen to paper on an extension with Leipzig, and Ake completed a reported £41-million transfer to Manchester City in August.

Despite facing what executive Ed Woodward called the "most testing" period in United's history, the club ended up spending around £75 million in the transfer window.
