Mesut Ozil's career at Arsenal is all but over.

The German playmaker has been left out of the club's 25-man Premier League squad by manager Mikel Arteta, it was confirmed Tuesday.

The 32-year-old, who hasn't featured for the Gunners since March, was also axed from the team's Europa League roster; Arsenal begin their European campaign against Rapid Vienna on Thursday.

With the domestic transfer window now closed in England, Tuesday was the deadline for Premier League clubs to submit their final 25-man squads. Defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos is also on the outside looking in at Arsenal.

Neither player is eligible to feature in the Premier League until January - rosters can be revised after the winter transfer period - but Ozil, in particular, will again be a candidate to leave north London when the window opens.

Until then, he'll only be able to play for the Under-23 team.

Arsenal wanted to move Ozil in the summer, but his reported £350,000-per-week contract was an obvious albatross, hindering the club's ability to find suitors capable of taking on his hefty salary.

Offers reportedly came in from the Middle East, but the attacking midfielder opted to stay in England, believing he could regain a place in Arteta's team.

The former Real Madrid star is in the final year of his deal, and if Arsenal are successful in moving him along in January, they will save roughly £8 million on their wage bill before his contract comes off the books.
