Manchester United have launched exploratory talks with Burnley over a potential loan move for Netherlands forward Wout Weghorst, reports The Athletic.

The Red Devils approached Burnley about signing the 30-year-old during the January transfer window in an effort to boost their attack.

Weghorst joined Besiktas on loan last summer and was expected to play in Turkey for the 2022-23 campaign after Burnley was relegated from the Premier League to the Championship last season.

Because Burnley's loan deal with Besiktas includes a €10-million buy option, the Turkish side would need to approve Weghorst's possible move to Old Trafford in order to break its current agreement with Burnley, The Athletic adds.

Weghorst, who registered two goals in the Netherlands' quarterfinal defeat to Argentina at the World Cup last month, has scored nine times in 18 matches in all competitions this season.

Manchester United are eager to reinforce an attack that lost Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr after his second stint at Old Trafford ended on a sour note last month. United have also been without winger Jadon Sancho, who's been unavailable since October due to personal reasons.
