The course

The Old Course saw golf played for the first time in 1552, making it the oldest golf course in the world. It officially became the Old Course when St. Andrews opened another 18 known as the New Course in 1895.

For the Open Championship, St. Andrews will play to a par of 72 at 7,313 yards in total. The layout has the unique setup of 14 par 4s with just one par 3 and one par 5 on each set of nine holes.

If the wind is up, expect a challenge for the world's best players, but a lack of wind should lead to a birdie barrage around the historic course. Including Nick Faldo's win at 18-under in 1990, the most recent Open Championships at St. Andrews have yielded an average winning score of 14-under.

The oldest major in the sport at the oldest course in golf certainly comes with an abundance of storylines. Woods has had this event circled on his calendar for a while, opting to skip the U.S. Open to prepare physically for the trip to Scotland, while McIlroy looks to add his fifth major at a course he shot a sizzling 9-under 63 to open the event in 2010 as a 21-year-old.
