Report: Van Nistelrooy to be named new Leicester boss

Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to take over as Leicester City manager after the recent sacking of Steve Cooper, according to The Telegraph's John Percy and Sam Wallace.

The 48-year-old could be appointed before Saturday's trip to Brentford after numerous other candidates, including former Chelsea manager Graham Potter and ex-West Ham United handler David Moyes, were considered and then ruled out, Percy and Wallace added.

Van Nistelrooy took interim charge of Manchester United after the dismissal of Erik ten Hag in October. He registered three wins and one draw before Ruben Amorim was confirmed as the club's full-time boss at the start of November. Van Nistelrooy, who won the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup with United during this playing career, said he wanted to remain at the club but Amorim decided not to keep the former striker as part of his coaching setup.

Leicester won't need to pay any compensation to bring Van Nistelrooy aboard given he left United.

Van Nistelrooy almost completed a full season as PSV Eindhoven boss in 2022-23. He led the team to glory in the KNVB Cup and the Johan Cruyff Shield and helped it finish second in the Eredivisie, but he left days before the last league match of the campaign amid reports of a player revolt.

Leicester are one point above the Premier League's relegation zone in 16th place.
