EPL referee Coote fired after investigation into misconduct

Premier League referee David Coote was fired by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) on Monday after an investigation into allegations of wrongdoing - including derogatory comments he made about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and apparent drug use during Euro 2024 - found he breached the terms of his contract.

Coote was initially suspended Nov. 11 after appearing to slander Klopp on video. UEFA then opened a separate investigation when footage appeared to show Coote snorting white powder during the Euros, where he served as a video assistant referee.

"David Coote's actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable," PGMOL said in a statement. "Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare."

The 42-year-old, who has denied all wrongdoing, can appeal the decision.

Shortly after Coote officiated his last match - a 2-0 win for Liverpool on Nov. 9 against Aston Villa - the PGMOL said it was reviewing a now-viral video in which Coote called Klopp "arrogant" during an expletive-laden rant against him.

Coote seemed to refer to Klopp's behavior during Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Burnley in July 2020. Klopp later criticized Coote for allowing a number of fouls against Liverpool to go unpunished.

"I've got no interest in speaking to someone who's f-----g arrogant," Coote's recorded as saying in a video released by The Sun. "I do my best not to speak to him. You can see me there with mask on. Social distancing 10 metres apart. But my God, German c---. F--- me."

The FA opened its own investigation and is also reviewing allegations Coote discussed booking then-Leeds player Ezgjan Alioski with a fan before a game against West Bromwich Albion in the second-tier Championship in October 2019.

"I hope you backed as discussed," Coote allegedly told the individual after giving the player a yellow card.

The FA's investigation remains open.

Coote insisted any issues in his personal life "never affected" his on-field decisions.

"I have always held the integrity of the game in the highest regard, refereeing matches impartially and to the best of my ability," he said.

Coote officiated 112 Premier League matches, including three Liverpool fixtures. He also oversaw five Liverpool matches in cup competitions.
