It had to be him.

Lionel Messi came off the bench Saturday to score the goal that secured Barcelona's eighth La Liga title in 11 years.

Messi delivered the crucial blow in the 62nd minute of a 1-0 victory over Levante, producing a typically composed left-footed finish inside the area to extend Barcelona's reign as champions.

Levante tried to delay the inevitable in the final 15 minutes, pushing forward every chance they could, but Barcelona hung on.

The Blaugrana achieved the feat with three matches to spare.

They've now won 26 league titles - second in Spain to Real Madrid's 33.

Messi has been crowned on 10 of those occasions - more than any single player in Barcelona history.

As has been the case all season, the Argentine supplied the goods when Barcelona needed inspiration. Messi had the peace of mind to convert from close range as his teams scrambled in front of goal.

His 34 league tallies have been worth 17 points to his side this season.

With the La Liga title in the bag, Barcelona can turn their attention to the Champions League, where they face Liverpool in the semifinals. They host the first leg at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.

But for the moment, Barcelona can celebrate. The players relished clinching the title at home, which last happened back in 2010. The supporters serenaded Messi as he lifted the trophy, and were then treated to a singing performance, fireworks, and a lap of honor.
