Xavi: Barcelona won't sign Haaland due to financial issues

La Liga-imposed financial constraints at Barcelona will prevent the Catalan club from launching a pursuit of Erling Haaland this summer, manager Xavi confirmed.

"It is very difficult because of the economic situation," Xavi said in a news conference Monday, as translated by ESPN's Sam Marsden and Moises Llorens, after being asked about Barca missing out on the coveted Norwegian. "I can't lie to you, that is the reality.

"I wouldn't say (it is only down to money). I am not going to disrespect other clubs' sporting projects. We are not the only club with a good project. City have won a lot of titles and compete at the top level.

"But if what you say happens (and Barca don't sign Haaland), it would have been because of financial issues."

In March, it was reported that Manchester City and Real Madrid were leading the race to sign the Borussia Dortmund striker, who has a €75-million release clause.

Manchester City have since moved ahead of Los Blancos after Haaland reportedly instructed his representatives in April to move ahead with plans to complete his transfer to the Premier League club.

It's understood that the 21-year-old Haaland will earn up to £500,000 a week on a five-year contract at City.

Barcelona have also recently been linked with Robert Lewandowski, but signing the Polish striker from Bayern Munich could be difficult as well due to their financial restrictions.
