Eriksen discharged from hospital after operation

Christian Eriksen, who suffered cardiac arrest during Denmark's Euro 2020 opener against Finland less than a week ago, was discharged from the hospital on Friday after undergoing an operation.

"Thank you for the massive number of greetings. It has been incredible to see and feel," the 29-year-old said in a statement. "The operation went well, and I am doing well under the circumstances."

Eriksen visited his international teammates at their training base Friday before heading home with his family.

"It was really great to see the guys again after the fantastic game they played last night," he added. "No need to say that I will be cheering them on Monday against Russia."

Eriksen agreed to be fitted with a heart-starting device known as an ICD - an implantable cardioverter defibrillator - to keep track of his heart rate.

The current Inter Milan and former Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax midfielder collapsed in the first half of last Saturday's match against Finland and required a shock from a defibrillator to regain consciousness. Denmark's team doctor, Morten Boesen, said Eriksen was "gone" when he and his medical team began performing CPR. He was stabilized and sent to a local hospital in Copenhagen shortly after.

Denmark and opponent Belgium stopped play in the 10th minute of Thursday's Group B clash to observe a minute's applause for Eriksen, with a section of fans in the stadium unfurling a banner reading, "All of Denmark is with you, Christian."

The Danes scored within the first 99 seconds but lost the match 2-1. They can still qualify for the knockout stage with a win over Russia.
