The United States likely knew Turkey would provide its stiffest competition in Group E play at the FIBA World Cup, but it may not have expected to almost lose on Tuesday.

The Americans escaped with a 93-92 overtime win against the 17th-ranked Turks, and it took some fortunate breaks to get there. Turkey missed its final four foul shots of the game, with Cleveland Cavaliers forward Cedi Osman coming up short on a pair of free throws with nine seconds on the clock.

Khris Middleton won the contest for his team by hitting the tying and go-ahead foul shots with 2.3 seconds remaining.

Overtime was forced when Jayson Tatum was awarded three free throws for a hard foul on a shot from the arc at the end of regulation. He missed one of those three.

The Boston Celtics forward suffered an injury in the extra frame when his ankle gave out under the basket.

Tatum finished the game with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Middleton led the U.S. with 15 points. Ersan Ilyasova scored a game-high 23 for Turkey.
