Report: United considering Meunier for problematic right-back slot

Manchester United have identified Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier as a more affordable right-back target during the summer transfer window, according to Ed Malyon and Miguel Delaney of the Independent.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Kieran Trippier have been linked with moves to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, but it's believed negotiating with either player's club - Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively - would prove more difficult than trying to strike a deal with PSG.

Meunier's representatives are understood to be looking for a next stop in the full-back's career. The 27-year-old Belgian international has only 14 months remaining on his PSG contract and is currently having to divide his playing time with Dani Alves.

"Am I unhappy about being a sub more often than a starter? Of course, like any competitor would be. I have my theories as to why but (I) don't want to go into them," Meunier told Belgian newspaper l'Avenir on Monday, as translated by the Independent.

There should be an opening for minutes at Manchester United with 33-year-old Antonio Valencia's contract expiring at the end of June. Other players who would challenge Meunier's place in the Red Devils' starting XI would be Ashley Young, who's also 33, youngster Diogo Dalot, and Matteo Darmian, the latter of whom has been out of favor at Old Trafford for some time.
