It didn't take long for Manchester City to complete its first signing of the summer.

Within hours of news breaking that the Citizens had reached an agreement to sign Bernardo Silva from AS Monaco, official confirmation arrived Friday from the Manchester club.

The 22-year-old, whose silky skills in midfield helped Monaco achieve a first Ligue 1 title since 2000, fetched a £43.6-million fee, according to The Telegraph's James Ducker.

The Guardian's Marcus Christenson and Fabrizio Romano originally reported that the deal would cost City a club-record £60 million, but they later backtracked on their initial stance.

Silva, who will wear the No. 20, will join his new squad once the transfer window opens on July 1.

"It feels great. To be honest, I'm now at one of the best teams in the world. To be part of this club and to have this opportunity is great," Silva told CityTV.

The Portuguese playmaker is being considered as namesake David Silva's heir. Showing technical ability on the ball and a penchant to maintain possession, Bernardo Silva made his biggest impact on the right flank for Monaco.

As has been the case for several of Pep Guardiola's signings at the Etihad, the chance to learn from the former Barcelona manager clearly enticed the Benfica product.

"If not the best coach in the world, he is one of the best," Silva said. "Of course when you have the opportunity of being trained by Guardiola, you don't say no."

Guardiola witnessed Silva's trickery firsthand as Monaco dispatched City in the Champions League knockout stage.

Now he can watch one of his costliest signings on a regular basis.
