Milan fire Marco Giampaolo after dreadful start to Serie A season

AC Milan announced Tuesday that Marco Giampaolo has been relieved of his duties as manager.

"AC Milan announces it has relieved Mr. Marco Giampaolo from his position as coach of the first team," read a statement from the side. "The club is grateful to Marco for the work carried out and wishes him all the best to come in his professional career."

Milan currently sit three points above the relegation zone after losing four of their opening seven matches and accumulating just nine points under Giampaolo.

Giampaolo, who replaced Gennaro Gattuso this past summer, ends his tenure at Milan as the shortest-serving coach in club history after just 111 days in charge.

The club did not announce Giampaolo's replacement, but reports out of Italy suggest Milan are close to a deal to sign Stefano Pioli as their new manager.

Pioli was in charge of Inter during the 2016-17 season. He then had a two-year stint at Fiorentina before resigning this past April.

Milan have gone through eight managers since the 2014 firing of Massimiliano Allegri, the last coach to guide the club to a Serie A title in 2011.
