AC Milan renewed Zlatan Ibrahimovic's contract until June 2023 on Monday despite the striker's ongoing injury problems.

The Swede, who turns 41 in October, was ruled out for seven-to-eight months in May following a successful knee operation. Before the procedure, Ibrahimovic played the second half of Milan's Scudetto-winning campaign "without an ACL" in his left knee.

"I have never suffered so much on and off the pitch," he said after detailing an intense course of injections to get him through the season.

Ibrahimovic started just 11 Serie A matches last term but still weighed in with eight goals and two assists.

The veteran has previously confessed to being fearful of finishing his football career and has vowed to continue as long as possible. "I will not find it anywhere else," he admitted of the adrenaline he gets from playing.

Ibrahimovic famously took only seven months to return to action after damaging the cruciate ligament in his knee during his spell at Manchester United.
