Setien's career in football is extensive. A midfielder during his playing days, he took the pitch at Real Racing Club, Atletico Madrid, UD Logrones, and Levante UD. At the international level, he represented Spain and warmed the bench at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Although Setien never dreamed of becoming a coach, his managerial resume includes Racing, Club Polideportivo Ejido, Equatorial Guinea, Logrones, Club Deportivo Lugo, and UD Las Palmas, where he filled the vacancy left by Paco Herrera when Los Amarillos were in the relegation zone. In 2015-16, he led the island club to a 14th-place finish in La Liga.

Victor Sanchez del Amo was sacked as Betis' manager on May 9, and Alexis Trujillo oversaw Los Beticos' last two games of the season.
