Javi Munoz's 93rd-minute strike earned Las Palmas an important 1-0 La Liga win over Atletico Madrid on Saturday, hammering another nail into the coffin of the Rojiblancos' title ambitions.

Diego Simeone's side, third, now trail leaders Barcelona by 10 points after the Catalans came from two goals down to beat Celta Vigo 4-3 earlier in the day.

Atletico's season is virtually over and although the coach insisted his team would fight until the end for La Liga, their chances of mounting a comeback are next to none.

They are three points behind second-placed Real Madrid, who host Athletic Bilbao, fourth, on Sunday.

Victory helped Las Palmas climb provisionally 17th, out of the relegation zone and two points clear of Alaves, who face Sevilla on Sunday.

The match started slowly, with Las Palmas the more enterprising side, boasting more of the ball.

Alex Suarez should have sent the hosts ahead with a header which he directed straight at Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Dario Essugo, on loan from Sporting Lisbon and already signed for next season by Chelsea, lashed wide of Oblak's near post from range.

Atletico created two glorious chances towards the end of the half but were denied both times by Croatian goalkeeper Dinko Horkas.

The stopper made a remarkable save with his arm to deny Julian Alvarez from close range, after Giuliano Simeone fired a low cross into the former Manchester City's striker's path.

Then Horkas got down smartly to tip away Alexander Sorloth's header after another pin-point cross from Atletico coach Diego Simeone's son.

Atletico brought on Rodrigo De Paul after injury and Antoine Griezmann, who had been dropped to the bench after a run of poor form.

Simeone drilled wide of the near post after cutting in from the right as the explosive winger refused to give up, despite Las Palmas defending sturdily.

Munoz beat Oblak in stoppage time after reaching a bouncing ball in the area that Atletico defender Jose Gimenez failed to clear, but faced a nervous wait for the goal to be validated during a VAR check for offside against him.

Once it was given he and his team-mates celebrated wildly with fans as Las Palmas earned a crucial win in their battle against the drop.
