The St. Louis Cardinals will shut down veteran starter Adam Wainwright from baseball activities for 10-to-14 days after he received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his injured elbow, according to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com.

Despite the news, the Cardinals remain optimistic Wainwright will return to the rotation this year. The veteran was placed on the disabled list Friday after surrendering five runs over three innings in his last start.

Wainwright missed all of 2011 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in the same elbow. In 12 seasons, it's just the fifth time in Wainwright's career that he's been placed on the disabled list.

In 23 starts this year, Wainwright has pitched to a 5.12 ERA and 4.27 FIP with 96 strikeouts and 44 walks.
