Red Sox clinch postseason berth for 2nd straight year

Patrick McDermott / USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox are returning to the postseason.

Boston guaranteed at least a wild card spot following its 9-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, combined with the Los Angeles Angels' 6-5 loss to the Cleveland Indians.

It's the first time the Red Sox have reached the postseason in back-to-back years since 2008-2009.

The Red Sox enter Thursday's off day with a three-game lead over the New York Yankees and 10 games remaining. Their magic number to clinch the American League East is eight.

Boston won the division last season before being swept in three games by the Indians in the American League Division Series. The Red Sox have never won the AL East in back-to-back seasons.
