Young fan carried out of Yankee Stadium after being hit by foul ball

A young fan was struck by a foul ball and appeared to be seriously injured during Wednesday's game between the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium.

The girl who was hit by Todd Frazier's line drive while sitting above the third-base dugout is reportedly a toddler who was attending the game with her grandparents, according to ESPN's Andrew Marchand.

Upon seeing what happened, Frazier fell to one knee in prayer and players from both teams looked on in anguish as she was tended to, causing a nearly five-minute delay in the game. The fan was carried out of the stadium with medical personnel in tow.

In a statement released shortly after the incident, the Yankees confirmed that the child was taken to a local hospital for further treatment, and declined to provide any more information, citing privacy issues.

During his postgame press conference Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he was told the girl "is doing OK," according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

Several MLB teams have already extended netting to protect fans who aren't directly behind home plate. The New York Mets added extra netting at Citi Field in the middle of this season, only a few months after a member of New York council proposed a bill that would legislate netting at ballparks in the city.

Netting at Yankee Stadium does not extend beyond the home-plate area. A Yankees executive told Forbes' Maury Brown earlier this month that the team is "continu(ing) to discuss the technical parts of installing expanded netting," but did not provide a time frame for any installations.
